Van 4-7 mei is op de Prinin Golf & Country in Bansko, Bulgarije een internationaal toernooi gespeeld: de WGTF Invitational (IBM Golf Teachers Tournament).

Na enkele Level III Cursussen en de start van de WGTF of Bulgaria, nu twee jaar geleden, was dit het eerste internationale WGTF toernooi wat georganiseerd is door de WGTF of Bulgaria in samenwwerking met de WGTF of The Netherlands en de Bulgarian Golf Federation. Ruim veertig genodigden uit Bulgarije, professionals, amateurs en relaties, en een delegatie van tien Nederlandse spelers hebben genoten van een succesvol toernooi in de prachtige omgeving van de Pirin Golf & Country Club.

Mr. Geoff Bryant, oprichter en president van de USGTF en WGTF wereldwijd en zijn dochter Meagan waren als prominente gasten aanwezig om getuige te zijn van de ontwikkelingen binnen de WGTF of Bulgaria. Wij danken hen zeer voor hun aanwezigheid evenals de heren Ilko Yotzev en Zdravko Dachev voor de organisatie en de heer Yordan Kanazirev en mevrouw Manya Kosanova voor de wederom voortreffelijke en gastvrije ontvangst.

Er is twee dagen individueel gespeeld om het prijzengeld en twee dagen in teamverband. De wedstrijddagen zijn uitstekend verlopen met uitzondering van de eerste speeldag in de individuele klasse waarbij aanhoudende regen en een koude bergwind het spelersveld heeft gehalveerd. De commissie achtte de baanomstandigheden echter goed genoeg om de wedstrijd door te laten gaan. Een bijzonder compliment mag worden gemaakt aan Werner van Strien, die ondanks de barre omstandigheden een fantastische ronde van 81 slagen heeft genoteerd van de backtees en daarmee zowel zijn PAT als prijzengeld voor de derde plaats met verve heeft verdiend. Winnaar bij de professionals werd Bjorn Beekman met twee uitstekende rondes van 76 en 83 slagen.

Er hebben buiten de wedstrijd verschillende zeer interessante gesprekken plaatsgevonden tussen de WGTF of Bulgaria, The Netherlands en de USGTF om op alle vlakken de samenwerkingen verder gestalte te geven en zowel de golfsport als de opleiding van professionals in Bulgarije verder te ondersteunen.

Bulgarije is als golfland in staat gebleken om een schitterend toernooi te kunnen organiseren en er zijn plannen om eind volgend jaar de tweejaarlijkse European Golf Teachers Cup hier te laten plaatsvinden, in een uniek en groots opgezet format.

Wij kijken terug op een bijzonder leuk verblijf in het prachtige Bulgarije, de mooie stad Sofia met haar bezienswaardigheden en restaurants en de schitterende golfcourse van Pirin G&CC.

  From may 4-7 a international tournament, The WGTF Invitational (IBM Golf Teachers Tournament) has been played at the Pirin Golf & Country Club in Bansko, Bulgaria.

Following several Level III courses and the start of the WGTF of Bulgaria, now two years ago, was the first large international WGTF tournament that was organised bij the WGTF of Bulgaria in cooperation with the WGTF of The Netherlands and the Bulgarian Golf Federation. Over 40 Bulgarian invitees, professionals, amateurs and business partners, as well as a delegation of tien Dutch players have enjoyed a wonderful tournament in de astonishing environment of the Pirin Golf & Country Club.

Mr Geoff Bryant, founder and president of the USGTF and WGTF worldwide, accompanied by his daughter Meagan, visited the tournament to witness the progress in the development within the WGTF of Bulgaria. We would like to thank them very much for their presence, as well as mr. Ilko Yotzev and Zdravko Dachev of the Bulgarian Golf Federation and WGTF of Bulgaria for organising the tournament and mr Yordan Kanazirev and mrs Manya Kosanova for the, again, wonderful stay.

The tournament was played two days individual and two days in team competition. All playing days have been great with exception of the first day in the individuall league, where enduring rains and a cold mountain wind halved the field. The committee however ruled that the course conditions did not allow the competition te be paused. A special compliment must be made to Werner van Strien, who in those tough conditions shot a great round of 81 from the backtees, and doing so has proudly earned his Playing Ability Test, full Level III certification as well as the prize money. Winner in the profesisonal competition was Bjorn Beekman with two excellent rounds of 76 and 83 strokes.

Besides the competition several interesting meetings took place between the WGTF of Bulgaria, The Netherlands and the USGTF, to discuss the development of golf in Eastern Europe, to expand the education of professionals and cooperation in different areas.

As a golfnation, Bulgaria has proved to be capable of organising a great and profesisonal tournament en there are intentions tot organise the bi-annual European Golf Teachers Cup in Bulgaria anext year, in a unique format.

We can all look back on a very pleasant stay in the beautiful country of Bulgaria, the attractive city of Sofia, nice restaurants and de wonderfull golfcourse of the Pirin G&CC.
